DAILY WARM-UP SKETCH 2013

Running really late today, and I thought for sure I would be last to get here. Theme? How about something fun to start with, do your favorite Batman character?

It probably wont be batman, but I'll be trying to do something today.

What is a good page rate anyway? I've never had one, most any comics I've ever done were the "for free," kind. And pretty much all the illustrations I've ever sold were either at rates set by the given publisher, or part of a package deal with other things, so they've all been different.

I think generally you're looking at $100 upwards, but free works for me!

$100 per page? For pencils and inks?

Yeah, that seems fairly average, at least for people who aren't full time comic artists. When I was hunting for an artist the vast majority were easily $100 per page for pencils and inks. One guy wanted $450 a page. His artwork was very good, no doubt about that, and I think he may have done some work here and there for Marvel, but there's no way I have that kind of money to throw around.

I might have mentioned it before, but a friend of mine managed to find a very talented artist to work for free. In my world, that's like winning the lottery.

Got up on time today.

Mostly 'cause the dog won't poop. He won't even let me shove him outside in the rain. He's acting like I'm trying to kill him, so we have to go on a walk. He seems perfectly OK if he has on the leash, then outside is safe. (Like the hurricane is only in our back yard, the around-the-block-area is safe. WTF?). We walked around for an hour and he still wouldn't poop. He's always a bit of a princess in the rain, but usually walking eclipses any bad weather and he does his business.

Half the idiots in my neighborhood put out their trash last night, so there was trash bags blowing all over the street all night, along with the branches and other debris, brilliant neighbors I have. Hurricane force winds be damned it's trash night! It was funny watching cars have to maneuver around all the bags.

Either way I thought I'd take advantage of being up early and get a theme on the record.

We did Batman villains yesterday so how about Spider-man villains today...

Today's warm-up. The theme was Spider-man villains. Went a little nuts with the arms but stopped before I got to the claws, might finish it later.

I like that he's holding a drink. Not enough comic book characters seem to eat or drink.

Eating and drinking is mostly something that villains do, or that heroes do when they are on the wrong path. There have been a few articles pointing this out. It is weird, and somebody needs to take a stand against it! LET OUR HEROES EAT!

I'm surprised too, even more so in the age of product placement advertising. You'd think you would see the Kingpin eating or the Blob eating a veggie sub sandwich from Subway.

Greg, verygood artwork, I didn't know you were that kind of artist too.

Hmm...trying to stick with the theme but not getting any response....Maybe an open theme will attract more people to the thread?

Any rate, here's my 2. I suck at drawing Spidey.

NO, no, no, You don't have to follow the theme, do whatever works, it's supposed to be like stretching, but for drawing, it can be anything. Themes are optional. Open theme Wednesday!

And I really liked your Robin a lot, it deserves a larger more detailed treatment!

I think I like all of them except the Joker. That was phoned in. I think though that all of them have vast room for improvement. Just too much going on lately to get some good quiet drawing time. Son's sick today, had another seizure and I'm at home with the other two kids while the wife takes him to the e.r. to get checked out.

What about just making the daily sketch, whatever we are working on and want to share, but....having at least one weekly theme?

Then we can watch as each creator who decides to do the weekly default theme take the drawing from a sketch to a final piece and we can use them collected as a showcase on the blog? I mean fully fleshed out, colored and inked etc?

I would also like to see some clever/spins or original takes on some of the themes like some of the other blogs to really fuel the creativity and make sure we are stretching creativity.

Ok, no theme today. (It's just coincidentally appropriate for Halloween). Here is what I'm working on...

This morning and all week so far, I've been working on character sketches for an anthology we've been talking about doing. This is more or less a zombie version of Captian Flag Guy, our mascot here at the league.

Nice jose! I got todays sketch all ready to go but have to wait to get home to post it.
