| Unless you were a manga fan in the 1980s, you might not recognize the name Toren Smith; but he was a driving force in bringing Manga to America. His Studio Proteus did translations of Appleseed, Akira, Lone Wolf and Cub and many others. He was close friends with several of the creators behind Gainax, the powerhouse anime studio of the '80s and they paid him tribute by naming a character in their OAV series Gunbuster: Aim for the Top after him. He was one of the founders of AnimeCon, now Anime Expo, the first anime convention in America Toren Smith obituary at Comics AllianceRemembering Toren Smith at Manga UK | |

| Very sorry to hear about this. I remember the Studio Proteus books well, and Smith sounds like a good guy. Gone way too young, also. Thanks for all you did, Toren Smith, and rest in peace. | |
