DVD Piracy killed The Mandarin in IM3? Empty

I was just watching an interview with lynda obst, she's a big time producer, seriously, Sleepless in Seatle, Flashdance, Contact, Fisher King, The Seige, The Invention of Lying, and a lot more.

She was promoting her book, "sleepless in hollywood" and she had an interesting theory, about how dvd piracy eventually resulted in China dictating to Hollywood it make more big budget block busters.

It went something like, the Dvd market collapsed 2009. netflix and other streaming sources take s huge chunk of the remaining legal dvd market. What was a 10%margin, turned into 6and in order to make up the difference, Hollywood goes after the only growing market, China, And movie rental stores like blockbuster and hollywood video star closing their doors...

The 80/20 domestic/foreign ratio, became 20/80, with China only wanting from Hollywood what they cant do themselves. The Big Budget Blockbusters.

So now we make movies like IronMan3 Transformers 4 not only for China but in cooperation with them, so we can make special versions just for their market. Not to mention re-writing the Mandarin character to be acceotable in the China market.

And producers like Obst are now working in TV, with the ever expanding number of cable channels willing to produce new original content. Some even wanting high quality, edgie or controversial programming.

Quote :
Not sure if this is relevant, but it's also worth noting that, most movies in English have to be translated for audiences overseas, who aren't as handy with the language.  So, like the ghost of Stan Lee looking over our shoulder [he's dead, right?] the movies have to be something that can be translated to other markets.  The pacing and body language of a complicated guy-girl scene won't work so well in the Muslim world or China, but everybody can accept Iron Man punching bad guys.
