As much as I love and appreciate the new generation of cosplayers for their game willingness to bring fan fantasies to life, I can't help feeling that that site goes too far in the direction of creepy skeeviness.

I mean, yeah, hot stuff! And funny, too! But, seeing it all in one place like that? Eh, I dunno.

No sure what you mean by "All in one place?" What in particular about that site skeeved you? Most of the blog posts on that site have nothing to do with cosplay and of the ones that do, some of them show less skin than the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. The Thor shoot was more safe than a Sears catalog, with just belly and cleavage. Was it the nude models wearing Storm Trooper helmets? That was more porn than cosplay though. Do you just find porn skeevey?

Oops, you know what, I think I was looking at a view of the completenerdom.com site that was restricted to just the cosplay posts. I must have clicked on the tag for just those posts (Galactic Boner), not realizing what I was doing. Yeah, I see now that their coverage is wider than just that.

I dunno, I guess I was put off by some of the tone of the posts. I don't have any real deep objection to porn or sexy pictures by themselves, but since there is a history of women being turned off by the boys-club atmosphere of comics and other genre fandoms, I didn't like to see a site that seemed to be equating Nerd-dom with its creepier wings. Since I see now that this was partly due to a misconception on my part, I partly withdraw my objection.

It does still look like most of the links at the bottom of every article are for sexy pictures. Again, I don't have a real deep problem with that, other than that I prefer sexiness to be just a niche part of my fan interests, rather than my fandom being just a niche part of my sex interests. Does that make any sense?

I'm not sure what your objection is. Do you equate cosplay with porn? Cosplayers often have a huge presence at cons. And have put a lot of time and effort into their costumes. Both men and women. How does a group of fifty or so women posing in Princess Leia's slave bikini's they made themselves, send the "comics is a creepy boys club" message any worse than fifty guys in storm trooper armor.

Right, cosplay is fine. It's cool that women and men are being creative, using their skills to construct costumes, dressing up for fun. And it's fine that there's a sexy element to it. Guys and gals who are proud of their bodies, showing off, I don't object to that.

Likewise, I don't even object to porn, other than keeping it private, not in everyone's face. As long as it's all consenting adults, not being coerced or tricked, let them do what they want.

The line that I draw, and it's admittedly a very fuzzy line, is where some guys are gathering a bunch of cosplay pics all in one place, calling it boner material, and remarking on every article, "we bet you wouldn’t mind getting banged by this Thor. Lady Thor Is Sexy As Hell. Enjoy!"

And the test question for drawing that line is this: "Does this say to women that they are only valued as sex objects, rather than as real people with their own thoughts and feelings?" That's the issue that women have raised again and again, when they testify that fandom can be a hostile and unwelcoming place for them. We have all heard those complaints many, many times, so we should pay attention.

Fifty Slave Leia's might be just fine, when applying such a test, if the people presenting them are doing so respectfully, emphasizing their skill, their dedication to craft, their awesomeness, whatever. But when the context is only "look at these hot sluts for us to fap to," then that's kinda creepy. Clear enough?

So it all depends on the introduction? I think you may be missing the point of the bikini Sir!

A hot girl in a metal bikini is a hot girl in a metal bikini, whether you introduce her as a hot girl in a metal bikini or a skilled artisan in a metal bikini. In fact I might dare say some of us might find her even hotter with the more respectable intro.

On a sunny day, I'll bet a metal bikini would be hot, painfully so!
