Did I read that thing right or was that article woefully devoid of context?

One guy complaining that he couldn't make a living off of what he makes a writer? But he has a full time job, and only spends some unspecified fraction of his time writing?

And the one guy complained that he gets paid an advance for a book, spends a year writing it and then has to wait a year before his book makes enough to cover the advance before he gets paid, making it two years between checks? Wouldn't that presuppose his projects don't overlap in the slightest? Wouldn't he start on his next project after the first one? Getting an advance for his next book while waiting for the check from the last one? Or something like that.
