After reading the below series of articles, I was reminded of the scene from Casablanca where Captain Renault says "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"

I can't recall when I've seen anyone below 30-35 in the comics shops I go to. Even the gamer guys at the one look 40-50...

I blame the Playstation. When I was 13 in 1982, video games on the level of Pac-Man were not as emotionally involving as Teen Titans or X-Men. 15 years later, Tomb Raider the game was much more involving than, say, Tomb Raider the comic.
