Bert & Ernie are now officially gay icons. I guess i've always known on some level. It could have been worse, at least it wasn't Batman & Robin. You know how DC is with adopting popular other media portrayals of it's characters. At least Bert and Ernie have never been portrayed in any way to contradict there being straight or gay.

It's always interesting who is adopted as an icon for a particular community. Of course, it's usually a real person! Bette Midler, Cher, Sarah Palin all have careers that benefited from this effect, the list is near infinite. The Henson Company says it's not true and that sexual orientation does not even apply to Ernie and his ol' buddy Bert, but what ya gonna do? It's done! Wonder if this will affect Sesame Street storylines with the two or, more likely, they'll be used less than before. I mean, the Henson Company could embrace this development and that would be fine with me, I just don't think that's what will happen. Check that, they are probably going to sell a lot of dolls and stickers related to this!

Isn't Henson owned by Disney now?

I could be wrong, but I think B & E are owned by the Children's Television Workshop, not Henson/Disney.

I had to look it up and you're both largely right. Basically Disney owns all things Muppet/ Jim Henson except the Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock properties. Obviously there's some overlap in use of some characters by agreement I guess, and the wiki account mentioned that several Disney songs have been used on Sesame Street. So, the two companies are friendly enough to work together.

People are really taking this seriously.

It just made the list of things my wife says I can't talk about in front of my in-laws.

And I had a great line ready too, He was gonna say a bunch of Fox news bullet points, I was going to accuse him of using Fox news bullet points, then he was going to be insulted and claim they were his own thoughts, (That's how we always start)...

Then he was going to claim that the Ernie & Bert cover was somehow going to hurt children, I would ask, how many kids actually read the New Yorker...

He would say that wasn't the point, to which I would say Fox news is the one showing the kids...

To which he would reply this is just like the liberal IRS attacks on Teaparty clubs... and activist judges are destroying the moral fabric of this country, and he refuses to shop anywhere they say Happy Holidays, because it's a war on Christmas, and Paula Deen's freedom of speech...

affraid Hence the list of things my wife says I can't talk about in front of my in-laws.

Great, one more reason to cut funding from PBS.

LOL And don't forget NPR!

A couple decades ago I wasn't really in favor of gay marriage rights. The only stumbling block that I had with it was that it opened the door for legal adoption by gay couples. It seemed to me that those kids would have an especially tough time and childhood can be tough enough already. Twenty years back, that probably was true. Things have changed considerably in the good ol' USA though. The main reason that I'm now for complete marriage equality is that I realized children will always bare the brunt of historic and social change, can't be avoided. Thankfully, like our President, we've evolved. In fact, and I hope this news isn't confidential, Ness is finally doing something about his vestigial tail.

How do you know it wasn't the tail that had a vestigial Ness attached to it? No

Hey, anybody remember Tinky Winky? Jerry Falwell earned a heapin' helpin' of ridicule when a magazine put out by his organization claimed that Tinky Winky of the Teletubbies was gay. Because Tinky Winky is purple. And carries a purse. Oh, there was one other reason which people didn't mention: a TIME magazine article from the year before quoting a gay activist as saying that Tinky Winky was a gay icon. Because Tinky Winky displays non-traditional gender stereotypes like carrying a purse. TIME somehow forgot about the previous article when it wrote about Falwell being deranged.

To a certain extent I can sympathize with the point of view that says "Bert and Ernie are FRIENDS. They share an apartment. It doesn't mean they're GAY! Two guys can be friends without being GAY!!!" We tend to sexualize things too much in our culture. Sometimes a puppet with a guy's hand up his butt is just a puppet with a guy's hand up his butt.

But that said, Bert and Ernie ARE friends, and friendship is very imporatant to them. I'm sure that they -- well, if they weren't puppets, that is -- would see this as a Friendship issue, that two people who are friends should be allowed to be friends. All that extraneous stuff about Sex and the Levitical Prohibitions frankly lie beyond Sesame Street's neighborhood, and the Street don't have to go there.

Besides, I am more concerned with Bert's association with Osama bin Ladin.

Good point, I mean the tail had a pretty good point to it.

And all good points, Kurt, seriously. It's strange, I never particularly thought that Bert and Ernie were gay prior to their becoming icons, but I did kind of think Bert was ethnically a Middle Eastern American! I'll just go ahead and apologize up front, but I think it was the unibrow that convinced me. Is there some real or fictitious connection to Bin Laden or are you just trying to blow everyone's mind?cyclops

According to Snopes, a Bangledesh company that was making bin Ladin posters compiled a collage out of several images of bin Ladin they found on the Internet. One of the pictures was a satirical Photoshopped image of bin Ladin and Bert.

Then photos of pro-bin Laden demonstrators carrying signs showing bin Ladin and Burt appeared on the Internet. And thus was completed the Circle of Life

It's complicated. But the full story is here on Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/rumors/bert.asp

Wild! I could only wish that some of those demonstrations had been in Iran in addition to Bangledesh, since now former President Akmedinazhad (sp) famously claimed not too long ago, "We do not have any homosexuals in Iran".
