I almost hesitate to link to this video. This guy is soo good, he could make the rest of us consider just giving up! Fortunately, he's just one man and is on the other side of the world, so there's still hope for us to get work.

China wins. I bow before our new master.

More from him:

Oh, wait, I guess he is Korean, and just that drawing was done in China? Anyway ...

That fisheye perspective he can do is nothing short of astounding, along with everything else.

And he's fast, too! Very Happy

Wrightson draws like that--can just start with a nose in the middle of a board--3D grid in his head. . Amazing, beautiful, but not unheard of.

You're right, Peter, he's Korean, my mistake. But that just means between him and the Chinese ascendancy that I'll have two masters and the Bible says I can't do that, I'm so confused!

Yeah, I'm not sure what is most impressive about him; that he finds outside reference completely unnecessary, his outrageous speed or that he gets bold lines, thin lines and dry brush from the same Pentel penbrush.

And not even the slightest hint of any blue lines. I've seen some people use blue line pencils on a lot of tutorials, so it looks like the artist is drawing without sketching, but i couldn't see even the slightest hint of any. This guy is amazing!

For a public demonstration like that, we can probably assume that he did a bunch of prep work and presketching, maybe even drawing the whole thing ahead of time. Right?

But even so, being able to reproduce all that detail and have it all in perfect perspective and not wonky, that's amazing enough.

Yeah, and if the guy has an Eidetic memory he's able to just follow his earlier version, from a perfect reference in his head, either way, sketch or finished piece.

Absolutely, whatever he's doing it's still amazing. It's like watching a magician.

That's the spirit, Jimbo! I'm wondering as well if he's one of those rare artists who, to an extent, has a kind of projector for his mind's eye and actually sees or glimpses the images there on the surface of the page? Joe Kubert was like that and I think but don't know that Jack Kirby had the ability. I don't mean to reduce his accomplishment to tracing or anything, it's just one way of working and his technique is impeccable.

Yeah, I think Evanier once described Kirby drawing as like watching a computer dotmatrix printer in action, where he would just start in one corner, work his way across the page, and have a finished drawing at the other end. I wish somebody would have caught that on film!

I love that metaphor, or maybe it's a simile, of Kirby as a dot matrix printer, Peter. Either way, one thing is clear, Jack kirby was not only a comics genius, he was also a cigar chompin' cyborg!
