Geez.

The thing that really burns me up about stuff like this is, it's done from pure spite. Maybe the guy deserved it and was a total dick, who knows -but if he wasn't, if he's just some regular schmo and he and his girl broke it off for some reason, she's taken the comics for no other reason than to hurt him. Now, if it's something like a TV, a house, car, whatever, I can understand that. You might take something like that because you both owned it and now feel you have the right to it. Going after your ex's beloved possessions is just nasty.

I knew a couple of guys who had to get rid of their comics when the got married. The wife insisted. This fella has a chance at least of getting them back. Slim as it is.

When this gets made into a country song, we will know that geek culture has truly triumphed. The last cultural divide waiting to be overcome!

Why would anyone marry someone who "makes" them get rid of something they love? It's completely ridiculous. I'm not saying I'd choose my comic collection over my girlfriend, but I'd be mad enough about being given the ultimatum to not put a ring on her finger.

It happens.

I remember dating some girls who would hint at stuff like that, but like you I didn't respond well to that kind of crap. I would never ask anyone to do anything like that, so why would I let someone do that to me? But to be fair their were a couple of girls who might have made me think about it.

But there are some guys who not only put up with it. They go along with it.

Nick Cage sold off his whole collection (or at least a whole bunch of it) before getting Married to Lisa Marie Presley. Heritage auctions had a whole separate catalog for it, and it was awesome. Lots of early Marvel. Golden age stuff. Coincidence?

One comic shop I used to go to, the owner would occasionally get a whole collection in, and as we'd show up on Wednesday and one by one circle around the table with the guys stuff, like some sort of comic book shop wake, the running gag was everyone would ask, Death or Wedding? Estate Sale or Engagement, some variation. And more often than not it was one or the other.

It's even a sitcom/romantic comedy movie cliché. Where the guy's stuff gets tossed out when the couple move in together or it all gets relegated to the garage. Or his den or office if it's not as formulaic. Remember in When Harry Met Sally, Carrie Fischer and Bruno Kirby fight over his Wagon Wheel table. Hell it was a huge part of the plot in 40 Year Old Virgin sort of. On the show Up All Night, Christina Applegate takes issue with Will Arnett Hockey stuff including a life-sized cardboard stand up. Hell, in the show Yes Dear, they do a whole episode, where Anthony Clark discovers a world where husbands rent storage locker's to save their stuff from being boxed up in garages and basements, they unpack, visit and play with their old stuff. One of his storage unit neighbors in the episode has his filled with Star Wars stuff. I'm pretty sure it was the actor that played Neelix on Star Trek Voyager, if I recall correctly.
