I haven't followed the brouhaha surrounding Orson Scott Card's involvement with a new Superman comic very closely, but this caught my eye. I'm a huge fan of Chris Sprouse's work. And I'm not sure where I stand on this. I've worked with a lot of people I disagree with about religion, politics, etc. Some who I learned to respect and discuss issues with in a civil manner. But I understand why someone would not want to work on this story now, because now it's a thing and if you stay on the project you give the appearance you support the views in question.

I just don't think you get anywhere by refusing to work with people.

You get a congress like the one we have currently, one that refuses to compromise in a government designed to work mostly by compromises. But then again I know I very likely wouldn't work with Brad Thor, or Rush Limbaugh on anything, so I'm a big hypocrite. I loved the novel, Ender's Game and I'm looking forward to the movie this fall. I was already feeling bad about seeing the Superman film, dammit...

I heard some people refer to Orson Scott Card as a bigot for his views on Gay Marriage, and other beliefs. I disagree with him. I am not a Mormon, nor do I accept most of his beliefs on socials issues. But I believe that the moment you refer to someone as Bigot, Racist,Asshole, in response to their beliefs or ideas, you've stopped talking to them about what they have to say.

So I would argue that whatever I think about OSC's ideas, the people who are the true bigots are those who are trying to prevent his creative work from being heard, that almost certainly has no evidence of his political or religious ideals.

Everybody is mad at somebody.

I read a story shortly after that one above, this one about Geena Davis being angry with Seth McFarlane, for doing that song at the Oscars, about boobs. Davis spoke to members of the California Assembly during a ceremony in Sacramento, "It's a shame that that triumph was enveloped in an awards ceremony containing disrespect for women, but it helps illustrate how tone-deaf we can still be regarding the status of women."

I think women in general would be better served if wealthy women like Geena Davis were less angered by a comedian making a joke about a few pampered millionaire actresses flashing a bit, AND more angered by a paternalistic government that involves itself in women's health care decisions, a government that dragged its heels to RE approve the Violence against Women act because republicans didn't want to protect Native American and illegal immigrants. I'd be more angry with a government that forces invasive medical procedures, I'd be more angry about old white male religious zealots who don't know what rape is, making laws that would give rapist more rights than rape victims, I'd be more angry about the NRA protecting outrageously loose gun laws, I'd be more angry about voter suppression, I'd be more angry about child poverty...

I saw that thing about Geena Davis. I just chalked it up to the whole entertainment media thinking we care about everything any given celebrity thinks about everything. Think if CNN asked your mother-in-law how she felt about stuff when the old biddie could easily do and Andy Rooney on micro-wave ovens or cel phones for days.

Very good point. Does the work espouse his views on gay-marriage? Probably not. But I understand why Sprouse wouldn't want to be a part of the thing anymore. His statement as to why he was leaving the project seems very sincere, "The media surrounding this story reached the point where it took away from the actual work, and that's something I wasn't comfortable with. My relationship with DC Comics remains as strong as ever and I look forward to my next project with them."

Wasn't Walt Disney an anti-semite? That hasn't stopped people from working at Disney. Yet none of their movies feature the voice stylings of Mr. Mel Gibson anymore. But I haven't heard of any bookstores banning OSC books. Why comics stores and only this new Superman book, there would seem to be more to this.

Fair enough.

My mother-in-law and I have had a running argument about here cel phone. She doesn't understand why she should leave it turned on, even when I'm picking her up at the airport. Even when I ask her to do so, so I can more easily pick her up from the airport... She could wait inside in the warm airport, I could call as I get near, she prefers to wait in the cold and then duck inside when she gets cold and warm up, hoping not to miss me as a circle the airport multiple times. I get mad and she acts like the victim forced to wait in the cold. Not someone who refuses to turn on a phone. We've joked about it for years. She turns it on to make calls just fine.

I was taking her to the airport the other day, and she started to give me her sister's cel number in case my wife or I needed to reach her on their vacation. So she understands the need to get incoming calls, just not on her own phone...

But she's not the target audience for the Oscars either
