I've been farting towards the east coast in an attempt to fight the approach of Hurricane Sandra.

That's what that smell was? Aim a little higher please, like at New York via Canada. Tho' I almost didn't notice the smell so much with all those campaign ads and robo calls. We'll be deciding the next President, thank you very much.

I've already decided the next president.

What's with the East Coast getting blasted by hurricanoos all the time? I guess it's something about the geography. Us West Coast folks don't seem to get nothing but fire and earthquakes (and we don't even really get that if you're north far enough)

We don't get anything here in the midwest, even if we do.

Someplace like NYC always has it just as bad or worse so the news always just talks about NYC. Like that huge blackout. Or that last big snow storm. And this storm will hit the east coast badly, so I'm prepared to sit in my living room drinking my bottled water reading a printed book by candle light, listening to my battery powered radio tell me how bad the storm is in NYC. study

That is kinda weird. Usually weather moves from west to east, like the jetstream. But hurricanes move in the opposite direction. I don't get it.

Yeah, it made more sense when hurricanes only had women's names because they're y'know, unpredictable, fickle, erratic ...uh, it is just us gents here isn't it? pale
Seriously, living in Florida all my life, I think they follow the Gulf Stream pretty much in the Atlantic anyway. They form on the way from Africa towards the Caribbean where they can keep on an westward track into the Gulf of Mexico either crossing land or traveling the curve northwards to Texas, Louisiana, ulp Florida. But, if they stray slightly more northerly when coming from Africa then they are caught in the part of the Gulf Stream on its return to Africa via a long loop north to near Greenland then England and South to Portugal and Africa where it is reinvigorated to do it all again.

Sandy is a weird duck though, as normally colder waters will sap all the strength out of a hurricane and somehow this one dovetailed into a big nor'easter, is that spelled right, my Yankee friends?

Ah, thanks for that explanation, Ed!

I think the spelling of nor'easter differs according to what state you are in? I don't know, it looks fine to me.
