Frank Miller directing JLA movie?

This struck me an odd choice, given his track record in film, but it's starting to grow on me. A crazy choice is the only chance the JLA has of being more than just a watered down Avengers clone. I'd rather they take a huge risk than play it safe.

I agree. It has super high trainwreck potential. But I keep thinking about Green Lantern, Superman Returns. Even most Marvel movies not being produced by Marvel are just OK. X-men 3, Daredevil, FF & FF2, Man-Thing, Ghost Rider. I'm just afraid a JLA movie will be like them. Ultimately bland.

Does DC have the same kind of oversight as Marvel now has with Ironman Cap, Thor, The Avengers, etc

What are the chances a JLA movie could be as good as Nolan's Batman? Or even as loyal as Zack Snyder's Watchmen? Not necessarily saying JLA should be dark, but as big and as epic and as awesome. But I keep thinking about Green Lantern, and Superman Returns. Movies where the studio seemed to fuss.

I just reread the All-Star Batman comics I had, and I just keep thinking that a Miller JLA film wouldn't be bland. It would be tough, over-the-top, full of classic references and it would be different, more than any other director might do. But at it's heart the characters would have something most directors wouldn't give them. And edge and a style that wouldn't happen with anyone else. And I agree it could go horribly wrong. But I think I would prefer that to bland and expected.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Darwyn Cooke or Bruce Timm & Paul Dini might do with a LIVE ACTION budget either that could rival the Whedon Avengers. Hell they could set up a JLA trilogy that would allow DC/WB to spin off all the major characters into concurrent solo or even team-up films. A GL/GA film would be a cool spin-off. Co-starring Black Canary and speedy...

It will be interesting to see how the next Superman movie turns out.

After the success of the Batman movies, you would think that the studios would be more willing to give directors more control with less meddling. But that's pretty rare, to get a director with that much pull.

Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids) apparently was able to get a lot of independence somehow, so that he could actually save money by doing most of the special effects himself. But I don't think the initial budgets he got were quite as huge as the standard superhero budgets these days.

I bet the JLA movie ends up being more like the George Clooney Batman film than the Bale Batman/Dark KNight films. Or Green Lanter, which was like a kids movie. Which is what the Warner Brothers executives will nit pick during the filming.

My guess is the suits would shoot for something more like Watchmen, but with less blue penis. It might work. Superman Returns was better than GL. At least in scope, and it would fit a JLA movie. They like to make the characters dark, i'm sure some suit will be sitting around saying, "Darker. Dark works in superheroes didn't you see Dark Knight Rises!?"
